Life-wide and field-based Learning

With good use of abundant natural resources and historical and cultural heritages in Cheung Chau, field studies centre offer different field-based learning courses for Biology, Geography and other subjects like Liberal Studies. With this learning platform, students can learn how to collect, process and analyze data and make a valid conclusion. New knowledge can be acquired through the course, and can also internalize learnt concepts and apply their knowledge in real-life. Moreover, altitude of environmental conservation and appreciation of historical culture can also be cultivated.

Food Globalization

Course Intro

Students use index method and spatial analysis to estimate the degree of globalization of food culture, for assessed the Cheung Chau food culture have affected by globalization or not. Students can learn the relation between globalization and localization through the field work and classroom activities.

Objective

  • To allow students understand the degree of globalization in food culture in Cheung Chau.
  • To learn the response of local food culture to globalization through the discussion of collected data.

Sustainable development - Heritage conversation

Course Intro

Students can understand the relationship between historic buildings and its historical grading through observation and references. They can reflect the effectiveness of the heritage conservation policy from the perspective of urban planning, and to evaluate the significance of “Re-use”.

Field-sites

  • Cheung Chau Rock Carvings (Declared Monuments)
  • Historical building form Qing Dynasty (Yuk Hui Temple, Tin Hau Temple, The Cheung Chau Fong Bin Hospital)
  • Other historical building (Cheung chau hospital, Cheung Chau Theatre )

Objective

To allow students to evaluate the heritage conservation policy through field-visits different historical building.

Enquiry Studies (Respond enquiry question by field data) – Dajiao (Bun Festival)

Course Intro

This is a one-day course that enhance students' learning motivation by traditional activities. They can know the origins and changes of traditional activities through the distribution and active area of different parties and also reflect the relationship between commercialization and heritage.
Students’ logical thinking are trained through the fieldwork in pre-set framework (students need to respond the given enquiry questions by using first-hand data).
(Maximum number of 40 students in each session.)

  • Cheung Chau downtown that related to Da Jiao.
  • Pak Tak temple playgroud – Bun festival venue.

Objective

  • To inquiry the relationship between geographical and traditional practices.
  • To understanding the meaning and changes of traditional practices in modern society.
  • To guide students to explore interesting issues and to enhance the ability to gather first-hand information.

Enquiry Studies – Research Method

Course Intro

Students can apply different first-hand data collection methods in pre-set framework. Also, form the collected data, they can learn data analytical skills for clarify the focus of the study.
(Both one-day and two-day courses on this topic are available.)

Enquiry Studies – Project Learning

Course Intro

Students can experiences whole enquiry students in two-day course (including designation of research questions, data collection methods, fieldworks, integration and analysis of data, drawing conclusion and even in presentation). Thus, they can familiarize the Independent Enquiry Studies.
(Maximum number of 40 students in each session.)

Field-sites

Cheung Chau downtown: shops, temple, facilities, etc. (Depends on the research topics)

Objectives

Through a complete project-based learning to enable students to "learn how to learn", enhance learning interest and autonomy.

Using different disciplines of knowledge, practice cross-unit community learning
